From the news, very big. The tsunami will hit Hawaii this afternoon. That's what CNN is saying. Hawaii is going to be evacuated. The coastline at least. How far can they get though out of the way? I guess it will depend by how big it is how far inland it goes.

As bad as an 8.8 is (CNN said it was 7th most powerful EVER recorded), it is still rocking there in Chile and Argentina with all the aftershocks plus the tsunamis in the pacific are traveling 1000's of miles and picking up energy. These things tend to happen when the moon's gravitational pull on Earth is strongest. I wonder if the moon is full today.

That's wild! I dont know why more people dont make the connection between the moon's gravity and seismic events. The Moon exerts pull on land masses just as it does to the tides. The highest tides occur during full moons and i think that a disproportionate number of the worst earthquakes do too.

Argentina was just rocked with a 6.3..

I doubt it is mere coincidence that Haiti was nailed on January 12th with their own earthquake..the new moon date was officially Jan. 15.

There's alot of denial about the moon's affect on earthquakes. I read an article where they were saying that the earth causes moonquakes, but the moon isn't strong enough to cause earthquakes. Here's the National Geographic article about it:

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/05/0523_050523_moonquake_2.html

I think the moon has plenty to do with earthquakes, not to mention other aspects of our planet. The above link/article quotes one man saying how the number of runaway pets escalates prior to an event (well, the lost/found ads increase). Animals aren't stupid..they know when to get the hell outta Dodge --->  :fan:

The effects are readily seen by anyone in healthcare (like Angelica said). When I was an EMT, then as an RN in the ER,  the worst date to work was Friday the 13th on a full moon night. After one or two of those shifts, you learn that it's not just a rumor or a coincidence that every full moon shift sucked ass water. (I need a smilie for that)

The tsunami is getting ready to hit Hawaii around now. The water is starting to recede. There are hundreds of live feeds on the net about this.

True we had days to prepare but that didnt stop me from taking a shit when my roof started to shake and looked like it was going to come off as one of the storm's eyewall stalled right over me for like 2.5 hours. The longest 2.5 hours of my life. Thankfully, only the gutter tore off.

This was the mild one, Wilma..

good pictures! Even video footage can't capture the sheer power of a hurricane. The last way-too-many years, I've had to be at work during the storms. The last one, we all stood outside on a patio type area and watched the cars getting shoved around the parking lot, huge pieces of metal flying through the air, and the rain coming down completely horizontal. It was freakish. Green lightening, too...I heard that only happens during hurricanes.

What really sucked was that year we had the three back-to-back storms, and we ended up being without power for a total of a month and a half. I was about to commit hari-kari for an ice cube and a warm shower--and if I never see or eat another cereal bar/granola bar in this lifetime, it will still be too soon.

Hurricanes are definitely shit-your-pants storms.

I think the green lightning is actually the phenomena which occurs when electrical transformers blow in a hurricane and the electricity arcs across the moisture in the air causing the green colors all through the sky.

You can see from the pic i posted how the sky looked orange or red too. The first time i saw that I thought a house at a distance was on fire (it looked much worse than that pic) but i think what it was, was a solitary light at a distance (when nobody has power) which somehow gets refracted into red and bounces off the moisture/clouds/air.

I guess it could be transformers..but what we saw was so high up and huge that it's hard to imagine that it came from one aerial transformer. It's possible, I reckon..just hard to imagine. Out of a lifetime of hurricanes down here, that was the only time I've ever seen green like that.

Hurricanes are scary as hell..but my thing is..at least we have plenty of warning, time to prepare, time to haul ass (if you can find the on-ramp....). But with earthquakes and tsunamis and such..you don't have time to do anything. that's why I'd never live in California.

Check this out, IG..

(about halfway down to green lightning)
http://wvlightning.com/faqw10.shtml

Quote
I remember seeing a very similar sight when I was in Florida on the East coast when hurricane Charlie passed through. Green flashes lighting up the whole sky every few mins in the distance. There was no lightning associated with the hurricane and the flashes were all coming from exploding electrical transformers. The transformers could not compensate for the extra electrical load that they had to take on when a power line went down and the electricity was re-routed through the transformer.

I dont think I can really describe what it's like because I havent been through anything else like it before. First, youre already on pins and needles because you know it's coming and youve been preparing for days along with the entire city. I would imagine it's like knowing that your city is about to be attacked in a war. In that sense, the preparation time that IG mentioned works against your nerves.

When the storm itself finally arrives, the number one thing to try to explain is how long it lasts. You know the thrill or terror you feel when being on a 2 min long rollercoaster ride? Well going through a direct strike is like that, only it lasts for 4 to 6 hours without being able to get off the ride or stop it. And yes, the air and everything else changes before it arrives.

Brock sucks!

Are hurricanes like cyclones...really fucking MOODY before it comes in like the air is thick with it ?

Hurricanes are cyclones, it's just different hemispherical nomenclature.

Just wondering whether the "feel" of it was the same.  The build up to the one I did was fucking eerie, it was really brooding beyond anything I've ever felt before but then the whole of FNQ has an atmosphere that is unique, you may have been up there and know what I mean...FNQ is full of all sorts of weirdos what with it being the last stop with nowhere else to go.

FNQ is our deep South, the feeling that you might be left dead in a ditch for saying the wrong thing is just their way of making visitors feel welcome...
