I think the green lightning is actually the phenomena which occurs when electrical transformers blow in a hurricane and the electricity arcs across the moisture in the air causing the green colors all through the sky.

You can see from the pic i posted how the sky looked orange or red too. The first time i saw that I thought a house at a distance was on fire (it looked much worse than that pic) but i think what it was, was a solitary light at a distance (when nobody has power) which somehow gets refracted into red and bounces off the moisture/clouds/air.

I guess it could be transformers..but what we saw was so high up and huge that it's hard to imagine that it came from one aerial transformer. It's possible, I reckon..just hard to imagine. Out of a lifetime of hurricanes down here, that was the only time I've ever seen green like that.

Hurricanes are scary as hell..but my thing is..at least we have plenty of warning, time to prepare, time to haul ass (if you can find the on-ramp....). But with earthquakes and tsunamis and such..you don't have time to do anything. that's why I'd never live in California.

Check this out, IG..

(about halfway down to green lightning)

I remember seeing a very similar sight when I was in Florida on the East coast when hurricane Charlie passed through. Green flashes lighting up the whole sky every few mins in the distance. There was no lightning associated with the hurricane and the flashes were all coming from exploding electrical transformers. The transformers could not compensate for the extra electrical load that they had to take on when a power line went down and the electricity was re-routed through the transformer.

I dont think I can really describe what it's like because I havent been through anything else like it before. First, youre already on pins and needles because you know it's coming and youve been preparing for days along with the entire city. I would imagine it's like knowing that your city is about to be attacked in a war. In that sense, the preparation time that IG mentioned works against your nerves.

When the storm itself finally arrives, the number one thing to try to explain is how long it lasts. You know the thrill or terror you feel when being on a 2 min long rollercoaster ride? Well going through a direct strike is like that, only it lasts for 4 to 6 hours without being able to get off the ride or stop it. And yes, the air and everything else changes before it arrives.

Brock sucks!

Hurricanes are cyclones, it's just different hemispherical nomenclature.

Just wondering whether the "feel" of it was the same.  The build up to the one I did was fucking eerie, it was really brooding beyond anything I've ever felt before but then the whole of FNQ has an atmosphere that is unique, you may have been up there and know what I mean...FNQ is full of all sorts of weirdos what with it being the last stop with nowhere else to go.

FNQ is our deep South, the feeling that you might be left dead in a ditch for saying the wrong thing is just their way of making visitors feel welcome...
