Dude (David Duke) actually ran for a Senate seat in Louisiana back in the 90's. I believe he tried for Governor too. Let's see...I live a state where 33% of the population is black, and I'm a white supremacist....maybe I can win?
Yes indeedy Bra1n, (not Yes to you, Kid65) but it's not really DD's resume that was at play, in a way. He was taking cues from other elected statesmen.
Sen. Robert Byrd and the late Strom Thurmond had similiar resumes, and they were from states with big black populations. Someone was voting for those guys, and that's what DD saw. Historically, in the late 20th century, politicians assume that blacks don't vote, and many times they were proven right.
Remember Trent Lott got shitcanned as Majority Leader because he referred to Strom's racist background in a glowing manner in some speech? Meanwhile, racist Strom, who was about 99 years old, emerged untarnished, like he was the Prince Philip of the US.
That's a topic I think about now - do old people get a pass when they spout racist comments, because they "are of another time, when it was different"?
Byrd is
still sitting in the Senate, and he was in the KKK at one time.
