They just released an updated version, so at this point, I'm taking it with a grain of salt. With that being said, the folks that have developed this over the years do it for very little, or no pay. I'm kind of surprised it's lasted as long as it has, and is second only, imo, to VB, for mods, themes, and support.

 I'm gonna move this thread to The Third Rail, as it's really not "news"

I suppose if they were to quit, it would mean no more updated forum software (bug/security fixes), perhaps no more mods (as they are normally approved by the developers).

This software is pretty damned popular, so I dont see it happening. There are too many very smart folks that use this. The question would be that if the developers decide to throw in towel, would anyone else be willing to assume the job, and would they be willing to pony up the cash for the rights.

I pay full price for my forum..

I just changed it to a news group for the Aussies to come to and leave proboards...none of them want to "flame" per se...

so if these boards fail, I am going to be stuck with egg on my face after just recruiting a bunch of people...

No one says that even if they do completely stop coding new versions of SMF, bug fixes or security fixes you have to stop using the existing software. You'll just be on a stale version (so to speak) for as long as your continue to have your forum alive.

Now, if the developers of Mysql make a drastic change to the way their database works that requires an SMF update to interact with it, and said mysql update is applied then that's a problem.

Other than that, everything is like security is small potatoes if you're taking the right steps to secure your installation to begin with.

Not so...much like everything else that's cyber related.. developers release versions they think are secure, hackers find a vulnerability, developers fix vulnerability, hackers find another...wash, rinse repeat....

With complex programs written in code like C, C++ and stuff like that, yes. But with a simple PHP forum software who's biggest weakness is SQL injection not so much.

You can use mod_security within apache to normalize the calls to the DB if need be.

smf closed Megan_au's board and she had 100,000 posts on it so they all went to proboards even though most of the msn posters started to adapt to smf....now some of them don't want to return even though proboards are ugly and have ads...

now I just checked emails and smf are telling their customers to go on promotional drives...  ::)

I wonder if kiwithrottlejockey who loves smf has taken steps to protect whatever it is that you computer geeks protect...lol

I dunno, being around flame forums for the past 5-6 years or so, there's always some asshat that wants to fuck your shit up, and if he/she put their mind to it....well, you know.

Bugs would also be a concern, should everything  come to a screeching halt.

But like I said, at this point, I wouldnt be concerned too much. It just seems like theirs a bit of internal staff bickering going on @ SMF...just the same as there is at every damned forum, eh?

Trust me on this one my friend. I'm a white hat hacker with over 10 years experience in the field and have personally written one of the best proxy blocker mods for the Register.php function available to-date. And no, I did not share it with SMF cause I also happen to favor trolling when I feel inclined to do so. If someone's going after your board they're trying sql injection, which like I said, can be locked down through mod_security.

Other than that, they're looking for open FTP with weak passwords, SSH openings which do not force one to SU to root and even buffer overruns within the Apache web service itself.

In my experience, 98% of the so called hacks are nothing more than an administrator using a weak password, trusting someone he shouldn't trust or doing something else equally stupid.
