Also, American viewers don't care a whole lot about cheating or infidelity in these broadcaster types. Johnny Carson beat the crap out of his first wife and cheated plenty, and his star never waned because of it. He was revered all through his four marriages.

And actors! Look at Charlie Sheen, Elizabeth Taylor, and everyone in between, and you have hundreds of cheaters whose extramarital affairs seem to make no difference to the public.

Preachers and politicians are usually held to a higher standard, although Jesse Jackson's cheating didn't make a dent in his standing with his followers. Anyway, those guys tend to get in more trouble for the lying about it than the actual boom-boom.

Yeah but actors do movies and are only seen from time to time…they’re not up there in everyone’s face giving their political views all the time. Infidelity makes people feel insecure in their own lives…of course, in reality its no ones damn business….the point is it makes people feel “off” about a person. He abused his long term partner?

He is commended though for thwarting blackmailers….that should give him some smug satisfaction…It would for me.

I wonder if he’ll retire?….this would be a good excuse to retire if he wanted an out….I don’t know….he has two black marks against his name and he won’t survive a third….in the words of other celebs and authors….this is pivotal moment in Dave’s life…..I know some people who cannot tolerate Dr Phil because of his treatment to his first wife. She outted him…lol

If that were only true. You obviously don't have the first clue about the Hollywood community.

I think Letterman handled the whole thing quite well. He knows he fucked up in his personal life. Who knows if his wife knew about the affairs or not. Who cares? I love how he told the story, it cracked me up, and I can't imagine anyone doing a better job of living with it in the public eye and still doing shows and facing an audience daily. mad props to Dave Letterman. At least he didn't quaalude and champaigne a 13 year old and fuck her in the ass after she said no.

I agree.

I have to laugh at this guy named Dr. Bob Arnot, a friend of the blackmailer, who has been quoted in the press on this matter.

Anyone remember Dr. Bob? He wrote a book that supposedly tells you what to eat to avoid breast cancer. Memorial Sloan Kettering and The American Cancer Society slammed it, saying that it was full of false claims. A bit later in his career, Dr. Bob somehow became an NBC news correspondent in Iraq, where his reporting was so suspect that Tom Brokaw would go to great lengths to get a British ITV correspondent to report for them rather than have Dr. Bob. NBC wound up canning him.

So now Dr. Bob is the big expert on the Letterman blackmail. Here's a quote from this guy:

"No one's sticking up for Joe. He's being positioned as a bad guy."

Gold!

It's interesting to see Shargel's manuevering. He's trying to drum up the perception that this was not about money at all. The story is, his client was a heartbroken wreck; a fine good man who was emotionally distraught, and money issues were of little concern to him.

It's interesting when you realize that the lone charge against Halderman is grand larceny.

I read somewhere that before she moved out, the girlfriend was giving him $1500. a month to help him make ends meet.

This is the sense I am getting about this….my senses are usually right.

Time will tell. Go read the comments on youtube and in reader feedbacks on newspapers…I don’t think Letterman is as popular as you all seem to think.

Quote
Letterman is worldwide.

Well aside from pointing out that whilst being worldwide he also isn't as popular as some think..in the same post, i am sure that your assertion that your senses are usually right, holds extensive gravitas right here.

Also, if there is a groundswell of negativity rising in You Tube comments and on Newspaper websites, I feel sure that the end is nigh, because those places are not havens for barely literate, self important, vacuous nutjobs, bleeding their own lack of self worth onto any available media they can in a desperate attempt to gee up their increasing foggy confusion and nagging dread that they are going to die alone.

Now despite that...In the UK we don't have the US phenomena of the Nightly chatshow, much as we don't have a Daily show style round up each evening, frankly i think we have missed a trick because of it.

But despite various dreadful copies, it just hasn't taken off here....it's a bit egotistical i think and that tends to put the average English viewer off, but for my mind they have never found the right person to do the job.

There was this guy, he was a gin soaked train wreck who looked like a hernia, but the big channels wouldn't take the risk or insure him.

Shame...coulda been gold.

"Right..my top ten things i drank this afternoon searching for a buzz....My grandfathers Cataract drops...Intern piss...Robert Wagner's rider...bleach...something blue and tepid in the ambulance...."

And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid
And he showed up with his mother

Maybe I am failing miserably to convey my meaning. If I am thinking what I am thinking, you can be as sure as hell wager, that others are thinking it too.

I wish him well. Some fans won’t care. They would be the diehards but life is made up of other people, the haters, the fence sitters, the, “I couldn’t give a shit." crowd. I saw him tonight…he looked comfortable….and at ease.. He looked very happy in fact…

If the media drop it, most will forget it until the next major celeb gaffe hits the stands…

The White Shark’s second marriage has failed after 18 months, for instance.

All this will depend on Letterman's private life and how that will be affected.

When divorces or the end of any great partnership occurs, it starts somewhere…, we could be seeing the start of an ending or be very well in the middle of one…

The English channels have/had Clive James and Parkinson but they’re the only ones I know about.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst….that is a good adage. .

Look, i don't mean to be snippy..but perhaps you might not want to bet on that.

For example, just because a person might have just pebble dashed the latrine with an explosive bowel movement, sensible people wouldn't justify it by arguing that they are certain someone else has just badly sharted.....get a prostrate exam..more fibre perhaps...or see a mental health professional.

Cheap shots aside....Clive James and Parky...
that's twenty years back, apart from Parky's awful recent comeback where he was exposed as a pitiful celebrity sycophant and laughed off the screen.

Either way, neither of them were the Nightly chatshow in the US style, the closest I recall was Wogan many moons ago, which had it's fair share of excruciating moments, Oliver Reed being one.

Johnathan Ross has been an Letterman acolyte for years and tried to bring it to the UK, but his cult of personality just irritates more than it pleases, and we cope with one night a week of him smugly chatting with Ricky Gervais again.

I think it's because we have evening soaps rather than daytime ones personally...either way...if anything comes of this scandal one can pray it means that scrotum faced keyboard player on Letterman gets sacked..he's a right little self satisfied twat....a bit like me.

Please don't shoot the piano player, he's doing the best he can.

Well we’re really lucky down under is some respects….we get the see the best of the best of the UK and USA plus whatever we provide for ourselves…

Over all though, TV is largely dismal and maybe that is due to most people going to the net in their spare time and not demanding better TV…I don’t know…

We lost an ABC show that was brilliant even though Andrew Denton wasn’t the best looking of characters and had his nose in the air when interviewing….the people he used to get on were fantastic..

One of the best interviews we had was with Wendy Whitely. Her husband a famous herion addict and artist Brett and her daughter was in, Mad Max 2 “Beyond Thunderdome”…..now deceased as well.

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/transcripts/s2440752.htm

She had people like Janis Joplin looking after her daughter Arkie,

I like Parkinson. They show him a lot in Australia and I think he is here….I am disappointed that you don’t like him….and Clive James [Australian] is as funny as hell.

Actually, the US could use some more good scripted television. We have too many talk shows. Jay Leno's show is appalling.
From dawn to 2 AM, we have dozens of crappy talk shows, and that's just the networks. Dave is the only one I can stomach.

We need more shows like Larry Sanders. If you want to go back 20 years, go back to that.

Also, Dave might not be the liberated womens cup of politically correct tea, but what would they replace him with at that hour? One of those abysmal celebrities-playing-poker shows? Like I want to see Andrew Dice Clay or Gavin MacLeod amping up the drama with a pair of threes. Please.

It is very English to shorten words.....Like Australians - Aussies, British - Brits, Catherine - Cathy Timothy - Tim....so it only stands to reason that Pakistani - Paki is simply the EXACT same thing and not racist at all.

Harry should NEVER have apologized over that incidence....

There is too much TV...and the worst shows are the sitcoms...omg...they're shockers..

Reality TV is off the boil now as well.

There is great TV show...an English one and I've seen her in the USA doing one. I forget her name but she is a dog handler and shows people how to change the behaviour of the wayward pet....good show.......entertaining and informing.

There is another great show on here in Australia...two teams of men and women vying for an Executive job....good show.....losing team has one member sacked at the end of it.....and there is also a real job for the person who wins it...
