The death of Print Media
« on: January 28, 2009, 07:00:37 PM »

What do ya'll reckon...10 years, before the print media, in the USA, pretty much becomes obsolete? I for one, rarely read the newspaper nowadays, and when I do, on lunch break.... it's got the same shit I read online when I wake up in the morning.

Magazines? The only one I still receive is SI.. and thats pretty much out of habit, as I've been a subscriber for 20 some-odd years, and it's nice to have some proper reading material when dropping a deuce. The porno mag is history with the advent of the internet, IMO. The news-based rags can be read online also, as most writers of articles also blog, so you can read the same shit.

With the way the fucking "cell phones" work nowadays, you can read your news on the subway/bus to work, so why buy the bulky paper?

Yeah, give it 10 years....

Edit: An interesting newscast from '81

hmpf, good one. i do believe print may become obsolete as the older generation become more and more familiar with how to navigate their way around a computer.

as for myself, i actually do get up, make a cup of coffee and read the news online, as well as throughout the day. but i do continue to receive several periodicals that i browse through-my local paper, the new york times, the post, and a few more political based rags.

i also receive several nonsensical magazines like people, cosmo, esquire, glamour, self, shape, new yorker, consumer digest, motor trend, and quite a few more (the school is ALWAYS doing a magazine thing for their fund raising shit  ::)). i tend to carry a few of them with me if i should have to go somewhere to wait, like a doctors appointment, hair/foofie appointment, or to get the car serviced.

i guess i can just as easily whip out the laptop, but for some reason i find a magazine more convenient and less cumbersome. plus staring at the computer starts to bother my eyes sometimes and i also think whipping out the laptop is rude on some level. that and i always feel like some nosy fuck is trying to see what i'm doing and more often than not i'm up to something unsavory.  :vc:

The porno mag is history

You take that back !

A mate of mine in Oz did a couple of years behind the door and he reckons that what helped him through it the most was me regularly posting him porno cuttings of girlfriend-a-likes...I thought that I was winding the fucker up  :stir:

Porno's will never die !!!!

hair/foofie appointment

I think in much less than 10 years most printed periodicals will be gone the way of the scrolls. Newspapers are already old news the moment you get it in this day in age when you can find near real time info online for free.

I remember when you had to go or talk to a stockbroker to get an interday stock quote and read the newspaper to see how much a stock was valued (the previous day). They dont even print the stock quotes anymore! It's an exercise in futility and Im afraid that most dated material with newsworthy items will soon follow the same fate.

Some of the junk type of magazines that Dani subscribes to may still be around in 5-10 years for those who like something to read while they sit at the toilet and waiting rooms but i think most things will be in electronic form and they'll make you print it yourself if you want to have something in your hands to read.

i wonder how much longer magazines or books will even be in circulation?? i dont think its even close to 10 years. there is a really cool wireless device ive been tempted to purchase off amazon called the "kindle"

you can order just about any book at anytime and even have your newspaper subscriptions delivered to it! i'm an avid reader and love the idea! but i still like the idea of waiting until the books i was somewhat interested in are 50 cents at the library or listed for a buck on amazon or reading something recreational that someone else purchased and recommended, thats how i acquire most of my mindless summer reading material.

We once had a female Dj play at one of our do's, she'd had a long flight and asked us to book her into one of those joints which of course we did.  The problem was it was a saturday morning and she got the trainee.  The poor love didn't go into a great deal of detail but her foofie got butchered and she had a very dodgy walk

The death of print argument has the same feel as the premature herald of the death of vinyl back in the 80/90's...vinyl is still going strong....

ive never had too much of a problem. i used the same waxer for years and years and recently had to find someone new. it was frightening, but i found a salon that was really clean and professional. it costs a little more but i suppose its insurance against those "gone horribly wrong" episodes. its not that difficult to smear wax and rip it off of another person, its just doing it to yourself that can be a nightmare.

i have what seems like a bazillion books and quite a few of them were autographed by the author, so youre probably right now that i think about it. books will stick around for a while longer as a novelty, just like vinyl.

I cant remember the last time i bought a book. For at least the past three years, all the books ive read have been from an online source like demonoid or the public library.

And I dont care who it is, i would never stand in a line just to get someone's "autograph" on a book so i wont be missing any of that nonsense.

I prefer to read books as books. It's a completely different tactile experience holding a book in your hands, you can curl up with it. You can't do that with the laptop.

As for newspapers, I read The Times out of habit and I do the crossword. But the news is old (I don't like doing crosswords online either).

I've seen it done but I'm not taking my Dell to East Hampton and getting sand in it.
