...poor bastard  :wheelchair:

Where do you want this whole internet / tech thing to go ?  Where do you reckon it will go ?

I'll be a happy little camper when I can slap on the VR helmet attached to my PS5 and actually "stand" at Austerlitz, Marengo or Borodino but mostly I look forward to the time when they figure out an interface between a computer and the human brain.  I foresee a future of being able to download all of your thoughts and memories therefore gaining immortality.  I also foresee me karking it the week before the fucker goes on line.

The last American soldier killed was Private Henry Gunter who was killed at 10.59. Officially, Gunter was the last man to die in World War One. His unit had been ordered to advance and take a German machine gun post. It is said that even the Germans ? who knew that they were literally minutes away from a ceasefire ? tried to stop the Americans attacking. But when it became obvious that this had failed, they fired on their attackers and Gunter was killed. His divisional record stated:

?Almost as he fell, the gunfire died away and an appalling silence prevailed.?

In particular, the Americans took heavy casualties on the last day of the war. This was because their commander, General John Pershing, believed that the Germans had to be severely defeated at a military level to effectively teach them a lesson. Pershing saw the terms of the Armistice as being soft on the Germans. Therefore, he supported those commanders who wanted to be pro-active in attacking German positions  even though he knew that an Armistice had been signed. In particular, the Americans suffered heavy casualties attempting to cross the River Meuse on the night of the 10th/11th with the US Marines taking over 1,100 casualties alone. However, if they had waited until 11.00, they could have crossed the river unhindered and with no casualties.

I've heard it said that the future of computers lies in nanotechnology and using DNA as a storage device. Sounds like the beginnings of cyborgs if you ask me and then onward to all the sci fi horror films that we have ever seen. Scary stuff, i think i'm happy with my limited machinery as it stands and i'm not looking forward to biology being part of computing but it's gonna happen for sure and sooner rather than later.

I dont know about any intermixing, half man, half computer bollocks but I have little doubt that some day artificial intelligence will rise to the point of where it can become self sustaining and should some catastrophe occur on the planet that wipes out civilization on a grand scale like what killed the dinosaurs and the other 98% of creatures living at that time, that it may survive and one day become the dominant form of 'intelligent life' here.

I can't see how, if were going down the road of biolgical processors and memory we can avoid having cyborgs as a reality, surely it's only logical progression? Also, with man being the God type figure that we are, we're not going to be able to resist building them in our image. Mind you, another logical conclusion means that we will be able to create beautiful female (ok and male) cyborgs who will give us robot lurve! I may start to warm to this idea after all.

Youre taking about two different things though. DNA is unique to nature and organisms. While it may some day be completely decoded and understood, I dont see any application for it with "cyborgs" or data storage. We may be able to mess around with it and change some things via the sequencing like we do now but I dont see that leading to a race of cyborgs.

Artificial intelligence or robots on the other hand, dont need any complicated self-replicating DNA structure to function. They need a strong central processor, a set of programming instructions and an energy source.

Theoretically, they may reach the point where they will be able to get the energy source from the Sun and be able to program itself and other artificial life forms once they have a stong enough processor and memory. They dont need to eat or breath like we do. The race of cyborgs/AI robots would then be parallel to humans and not an evolution from it.

To me, that's a much more realistic possibility than something like DNA being altered to spring up a race of cyborgs.

DNA computing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
DNA computing is a form of computing which uses DNA, biochemistry and molecular biology, instead of the traditional silicon-based computer technologies. DNA computing, or, more generally, molecular computing, is a fast developing interdisciplinary area. Research and development in this area concerns theory, experiments and applications of DNA computing.

[edit] History
This field was initially developed by Leonard Adleman of the University of Southern California, in 1994.[1] Adleman demonstrated a proof-of-concept use of DNA as a form of computation which solved the seven-point Hamiltonian path problem. Since the initial Adleman experiments, advances have been made and various Turing machines have been proven to be constructible.[2] [3]

In 2002, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, unveiled a programmable molecular computing machine composed of enzymes and DNA molecules instead of silicon microchips. [4] On April 28, 2004, Ehud Shapiro, Yaakov Benenson, Binyamin Gil, Uri Ben-Dor, and Rivka Adar at the Weizmann Institute announced in the journal Nature that they had constructed a DNA computer.[5] This was coupled with an input and output module and is capable of diagnosing cancerous activity within a cell, and then releasing an anti-cancer drug upon diagnosis.

[edit] Capabilities
DNA computing is fundamentally similar to parallel computing in that it takes advantage of the many different molecules of DNA to try many different possibilities at once.

For certain specialized problems, DNA computers are faster and smaller than any other computer built so far. But DNA computing does not provide any new capabilities from the standpoint of computability theory, the study of which problems are computationally solvable using different models of computation. For example, if the space required for the solution of a problem grows exponentially with the size of the problem (EXPSPACE problems) on von Neumann machines it still grows exponentially with the size of the problem on DNA machines. For very large EXPSPACE problems, the amount of DNA required is too large to be practical. (Quantum computing, on the other hand, does provide some interesting new capabilities).

DNA computing overlaps with, but is distinct from, DNA nanotechnology. The latter uses the specificity of Watson-Crick basepairing and other DNA properties to make novel structures out of DNA. These structures can be used for DNA computing, but they do not have to be. Additionally, DNA computing can be done without using the types of molecules made possible by DNA nanotechnology (as the above examples show).

Just sayin what i've read, it confuses the shit out of me as to how molecules can be used as computing hardware but hey, a lot of shit is over my head. I just know what buttons to press on a PC.

It must be the claws that make it type such shite . Seriously though, i hope Bra1n's got a handle on this. I'm really not willing to read through a load of Caskur spam every day. It's just not worth the effort and will fuck the site up.

The problem with the ignore function is that if i ignore one poster i still don't avoid all the other posters moaning (quite rightly) about the one I'm ignoring. It's like a malignant tumour that spreads across to everything that's posted. Like i say, he'd better have his finger on the pulse cos you know what they say about "one bad apple"? And I'm not referring to rocket fuel cider making potential here k? I'd hate to see all the hard work that's gone into this forum by everyone here being fucked by some brainless cretin with fuck all to say.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I look forward to new posters here to widen the gene pool etc. It's just when i saw the name all the memories of the last few crappy months of FC came flooding back. I hope to be proved wrong and if it really is that particular poster that they enter into the spirit of things and use their head. I just doubt it though.
