NO PORK, NO PORK, NO PORK!
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:18:14 PM »

Yes sir, we have a no pork stimulus package. Thank you Ms Pelosi and Thank You America for nominating a president who keeps his word.

From Fact.Check.org  The truth about Obama's Stimulus Bill rushed through the House and Senate.

http://www.factcheck.org/politics/stimulus_bill_bravado.html

In recent weeks, in his pitches to Congress and the public on the need to pass the economic stimulus bill, Obama has made several claims about what it would do. (Republicans, too, have made stimulus boasts of their own.) But these pronouncements are not a sure thing:

Obama repeatedly said the plan "will save or create up to 4 million jobs." Obama downgraded that estimate to 3.5 million once the House and Senate agreed on a less-expensive compromise bill. The projections come from at least three economists, but all say there is great uncertainty in their estimates.

Republican House members claimed their substitute legislation tops that, creating "6.2 million jobs." But their calculation is even more fraught with uncertainty and is not backed up by independent economists.

Obama said the bill doesn't contain "a single earmark." But whether one calls them "earmarks" or not, the Senate certainly added items that will benefit particular states. For example: $50 million for programs under the California-Bay Delta Act and $500 million for National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Md.

Obama claims that funds in the bill will result in "every American" having health records computerized "within five years." But experts doubt it can be done that quickly.

The president also says electronic health records will save billions of dollars. But the Congressional Budget Office says that even a decade of expected savings are unlikely to pay back the government what the government will spend on health IT.

The president said the bill will modernize the nation's electricity grid, reducing consumption by 2 percent to 4 percent. That's optimistic. Industry reports say that a new grid could reduce energy consumption by up to 4 percent, but not until 2030 and at a cost much greater than the stimulus bill would cover.

Pork for Mice?

And, as Schatz notes, it?s much more difficult to identify who may have requested what. Republicans have charged that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi benefits from some pork in the compromise legislation: She has long pushed for protection for the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse in wetlands in the San Francisco Bay area, and the final bill calls for millions for wetlands restoration that could pay for such a ?pet project.? But it was the Senate bill that said a sum of money ($50 million) ?may be used for? programs under the California Bay-Delta Restoration Act. The House bill included no such stipulation, calling only for $50 million for a ?Watershed Rehabilitation Program.? It?s worth noting that the Senate also stipulated that another $50 million ?may? be used for the Central Utah Projection Completion Act. Would that be $50 million of pork for Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch and Robert Bennett? Or a necessary stimulus for a vital project? The funding for both the California and Utah programs survived in the final conference report.

A Pelosi spokesman told the Washington Times that she had no involvement in directing the funds to the harvest mouse project, noting that ?restoration is key to economic activity, including farming, fisheries, recreation and clean water.?

You want to read more for yourself?

I didn't think so.

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf: It's kind of funny when the Repubs say that the bill is full of pork , when 40% of that pork belongs to them (but it seems their pork is ALWAYS necessary, as stated above by DH).  I guess you can say that the Repubs are full of pork and shit.  It's a do as I say, not as I do quandary. :uhuh:

On another note..this is just a clear example of Obama's lack of leadership.  Obama has stated over, and over, and over again how this bill is "needed to save the country", but all the earmarks in the bill are just re-election give-me's, on both sides.

This rush to pass the bill reminds me of Bush when he wanted a war bill to be passed "it is needed to save the country"..intimidation at it's finest!

Exactly how in fuck would one formulate a package that DIDN'T benefit particular states?

I think what's irritating me most, was the fact that it was a campaign platform for both Obama and McCain to eliminate earmarks in budget proposals. And for Obama to start backstroking this early in his presidency is a bit of a concern.

Now he's stating "This will be the last time earmarks are included in the budget"

I don't get it, why not start right now ???

What I don't get is, during Bush's Administration, earmarks never seemed to matter, he signed bills without looking for earmarks, or for that matter, even reading them (remember that bridge to nowhere, yep, Republican sanctioned).  Even during the "war" this never seemed to matter.  Now all of a sudden the Repubs are the arbiters of earmarks, they see this a life and death situation, but what they fail to see is that the situation we are in now is, to a large extent, caused because of the above, and the laizze faire attitude of his Administration toward regulations.

I guess because it was a Republican lead Congress, it was OKAY, to rubber stamp every and anything.  I would say this was a drunken debauchery of arrogance?

and now we see the consequences......

The truth is that whether led by Republicans or Democrats, congress has been loading bills with this type of spending for a very long time.  Eventually this type of behavior catches up and now is that time.  The piper is calling his markers in.

We as voting citizens must begin to speak up and start calling our respective officials and let them know that we have awakened and won't stand for this any longer.

Congressional spending is beginning to give drunken sailors a bad name.

You cant count on Congress to restrain itself and not pile up pork programs into otherwise important legislation no matter how much lip service they pay to it or how many times they get singled out (which is like an endorsement of doing a good job in their district) so i think that only effective way to combat it is with a line item veto.

This would work if we could elect a president who would use their own conscience instead of working party lines.

Now there's a voice of reason. However, to expect Obama or or any other weak kneed egotistical politician to step up and act boldly is foolishness. Still, if only we could dream of the day when a powerful man/woman could step into the white house and act solely in the interest of the people and the nation   :uhuh:

It'll never happen.   Congress will never give up the power.

And THAT ^^^^^^ is the root of the entire situation!

Power.  Congress is empowered by feeling that they can get these pet projects/earmarks/pork through and thereby prove just how powerful they are, to their respective constituents.

This also is fueled by the "it's all about MEEEEEEE" attitude of the voters.  "Who gives a fuck about some stretch of roadway in Mississippi?  What about the poor three dicked mole fucker who is losing its environment to discarded ice cream cones which plug its bowels and take away the nutrients from the plants it needs to survive?"

The respective representative gets the funding for the three dicked mole fucker through and even though the animal goes extinct 6 months later due to the fact that nature is like that and, despite what anyone believes, that critter was on nature's hit list regardless of any action/inaction by humans, representative X is a fucking hero to those constituents.

So continues the circle of porkbarrel politics.
