Finding a new EARTH!
« on: March 08, 2009, 12:49:24 AM »

NASA launched a new telescope today that will survey one corner of the galaxy for possible earth like planets.

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2009%5C03%5C08%5Cstory_8-3-2009_pg4_3

$591-million Kepler mission will search for something similar to Earth even though they akin the task as similar to "trying to detect a very tiny flea."
So, what I want to know is 1) if we do find an earth type planet somewhere far far away what are we going to do? and 2) If we do happen to develop a way to actually get there and its already occupied what then?
Will we plan ahead by taking bio-weapons along so we can wipe out the current occupants or will we be wiped  out by their germs because we didn't plan ahead properly.
I mean, if you think about it,  both scenarios are entirely possible.

Its not a matter of "if" but when....there are calculated to be 100 million earth like planets in our galaxy alone and I forget how many galaxies there are but I know its a lot  :wheelchair:

The problem is obviously being able to travel faster than the speed of light due to the distances.....to put the distances in perspective, if our sun was 1 foot away the nearest star would be the equivalent of 1 mile away.

The nearest star that might support an earth-like planet is Alpha Centauri.

It's not really a single star but rather a binary with a companion making it a 3 star system.

There's a pretty good wiki reference with respect to the possibility of such a planet in this system and rather interesting theories.
