The cost of living is a pressing issue in Croatia, with food prices taking center stage. The study, conducted by Koliko.HR and the Croatian Association for Consumer Protection, delves into the prices of essential goods. The 'basic basket', a collection of 51 food and hygiene items, saw a modest national average of €480.99 in July, with a mere €0.88 increase from June. However, this average masks a more significant story.
Zadar County, a coastal gem, tops the charts with a €498.08 average, a stark contrast to Sisak-Moslavina County's €462.96. This €35.12 difference between the most and least expensive counties is a telling detail. It begs the question: why such a disparity? Is it purely market forces at play, or are there deeper economic and logistical factors at work?
The 'standard basket', a more comprehensive list of 77 items, paints a similar picture. With an average of €726.58, it's a mere €1.05 higher than June, but the gap between counties is even more pronounced, reaching €48.57. Coastal counties, like Zadar and Dubrovnik-Neretva, seem to be bearing the brunt of these higher prices.
What's even more surprising is that these price hikes come during a time when local produce should theoretically be more affordable. Ana Knežević, the HUZP president, rightly points out that July, with its abundance of domestic seasonal fruits and vegetables, should see a dip in prices. Yet, this hasn't been the case, which suggests underlying economic pressures.
Comparing year-on-year prices offers a mixed bag. While the basic basket is slightly cheaper than July 2025, the standard basket is significantly more expensive. This indicates a potential shift in consumer behavior or a reflection of broader economic trends.
