Economic bailout funds usage
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:21:58 PM »

at the local level. how should local governments spend this money and are current plans going to uphold the spirit of why the money was given?

for example, in my area (watch the video as well):

http://www.myfoxcharlotte.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=8096196&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1

how the fuck does airport renovations, sewer upgrades and highway construction have ANYthing to do with local economic stimulus? it seems to me that the only thing this does is give those who already have money and a job a more conventient route to work in the case of the highway, and make the airport prettier for the businessmen. fuck that. this money imo needs to be spent in ways that improve the ECONOMY, not for convenience or aesthetics.

but maybe im wrong. if so tell me why.

Isn't it generating large scale projects getting many of the local people working, thus putting the money into the local economy?

I'm interested to know how you would have them spend the money?

Yes, that's exactly what the objective is. It's better than just handing out the money in a stimulus tax refund like Bush and the Congress did earlier this year because at least it puts people to work on improving infrastructure.

Hopefully the people employed in the government projects will use their earnings to buy goods, services, entertainment, cars and maybe even houses. They will also pay more taxes on the earnings. In turn, that money will get spent again by those businesses. In a sense, the money that got sucked out of our economy by the wars of the last 7 years is what Obama is proposing to spend on it now.

I have no doubt that one of the reasons why we're in such a recession is because of the taxpayer revenues that got sucked out of our economy and spent in Iraq. Not to mention the unparalleled world record deficit that we have run up.

newer better schools, both for children and adults as a way to better educate our populace and prepare them for real jobs in the future since NC is on the lower end of the education scale in the country for one, repairing the roads that already exist and desperately need it rather than extend a highway that is really unnecessary and more of a convenience than anything else, wipe out the trashy abandoned houses in run down neighborhoods and replace them with basic, affordable housing (hopefully employing those who live there) that isnt falling apart and equip our police forces and hire new officers to keep those areas safer among other things. all of which would create as many or more jobs than the "wishlist" theyve presented, and are far more necessary than making sure people get home 15 minutes earlier or have a prettier view while theyre waiting for their flight.

i just feel that it would be better spent dealing with the real problems in communities rather than making things more aesthetically pleasing and convenient.

The money spent on education in Florida is pretty shameful too. Florida depends on the lottery for much of it's funding and it's near the bottom in spending per capita in the nation. I think it's last.

There's two different things which need to be addressed though - spending money to stimulate the economy and spending money on other things which we should be spending more money on like education and health care but won't necessarily address the financial crisis.

You think the automakers and the rest of the country could use that $12 billion dollars in shrink wrapped federal reserve $100 bills which went missing without a trace in Iraq around the same time Congress was tending to more important national matters like holding hearings about steroid abuse in baseball? Over 360 metric tons of $100 bills, gone to who knows where.

Or the $100 million which just disappeared and is presumed stolen? Our lack of spending on education is probably one of the reason why we have so many fucking idiots in Congress and government.

Slightly off the topic,

But wasn't bailing out your automotive industry a waste of money when they didn't remove the idiots at the top.

You have a bunch of fat cat wankers flying around in corporate jets etc when their companies are going bust.

Sure bail it out and save thousands of jobs,  but remove the incompetence at the top at the same time

better yet, we bailed out the mortgage companies that gave money to some slow to no payers, and yet kept them on board... :hammer:

If you were told; I'm taking you're money, but you can't ask me how much, or for what, or how I'm using it, or ask me to account for it...what would you say?

That's what Bush and Paulson wanted us to do...

I don't think they are incompetent as much as they better R&D people.  They need more insight into what is viable in the auto industry these days; smaller cars, better fuel economy.  But you can't fault them for making cars that we in the US keep buying...  go figure....
