LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The recent birth of octuplets at a Los Angeles hospital has drawn applause from around the United States, but a controversy has also emerged over whether the mother's doctors did enough to prevent such a risky pregnancy.

Doctors at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Los Angeles said the eight babies, six boys and two girls, are doing well after they were delivered on Monday by cesarean section 9.5 weeks early.

The babies, ranging in weight from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds4 ounces, are the second-ever set of surviving octuplets born in the United States.

The first live-born octuplets in the United States, including six girls and two boys, were born in Houston in 1998. One of the girls died after a week.

Medical experts say it is virtually out of the question that the eight babies born in the Los Angeles hospital were conceived naturally, noting that reproductive experts have the tools and the know-how to avoid such high-risk pregnancies.

"When we see something like this in the general fertility world, it gives us the heebie-jeebies," Michael Tucker, a clinical embryologist in Atlanta and a leading researcher in infertility treatment, told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.

"If a medical practitioner had anything to do with it, there's some degree of inappropriate medical therapy there," he added.

so, what say you? ive always felt that fucking with reproduction is dangerous. i view it as almost a darwinian repercussion when an individual is not equipped to functionally reproduce, whether it be a male or female. in particular, a female. if a body continually rejects a fertilized embryo, there is a reason for it. i feel that harvesting a sperm and an egg and fertilizing them outside of the body and placing them into a host, not only has its potential for social conflict, but physically youre producing a child that may posses an inferior genetic composition that wasnt meant to thrive evolutionarily.

i also feel that utilizing drugs to induce the release of eggs or clinically harvesting and then fertilizing them outside the body and then returning them to the uterus in order to enable successful fertilization is also fucking with the natural order and because it heightens the potential health risks to both the mother and the multiple births, it should not be a routine medical procedure.

any medical practitioner who allows an exorbitant pregnancy (more than 2-3 fetuses) should not be allowed to practice medicine.

WTF, this is a single young Mom, living at home with her parents, has 6 kids already, and now has given birth to 8 more.

I hope they are independently wealthy and can afford the 14 children.  Otherwise, we will be the ones that in the long run will be maintaining them for the rest of their lives.

I truly think that children deserve individual attention from their parents and with that many it seems there is no way they can get that much of their mom's much needed attention without always having to share it or be interrupted.

They cant. I heard some shit on Good Day LA on the net this morning that the father or grandfather was going to go back to Iraq to work as a contractor to help pay for the expenses. And also that having that many embryos implanted was illegal in this country so maybe they went somewhere else to get that done and circumvent the law. In any case, this is one fucked up story.

lmmfao, you notice how rare it is for men to comment on such things as mass child birth? like, with abortion theyre cool with discussing it because of the whole murder aspect, they dont have to think about speculums, curets and little vaccums. but, put the thought of a few pounds dropping out of a vagina (in this case cutting them out, but thats close enough i suppose, hehehe) in their head for one instance and its like shell shock and they dont want to know nuthin' bout it! i dont think they'll even bother to open one of the 3 threads made about the topic.  :rotf: :rotf:

I think this woman should have her reproductive organs roto-rooted out like tree roots in a drainpipe.

This is an example of lunacy mixed with a fair amount of arrogance, in light of population growth.  In the 70's ZPG (Zero Population Growth) gained a slight foothold, but it quickly faded away.  I'd like to see it become a topic of national interest - hell, even worldwide interest.  But the chances of it happening are about zero.

In cases like this, to try and implement any restraints via the physician is probably fruitless.  Doctors are so enthralled with their ability to pull of shit like this they'll keep doing it.  And how would you ever monitor or regulate a policy against it?

In general the human race is totally blind to the problem of out-of-control population growth.  With the exception of the Chinese, and their policy of 2 kids max was pretty much viewed as a savage dictum by a communist state.

My favorite thing - religion, contributes to the problem.  Not to long ago I saw an article about some evangelical bastards down in Arkansas who were just proud as punch that they'd spawned 16 fucking kids.  Oh isn't that great! - there future extended family tree will look the the geometric growth pattern of cockroaches in a slum apartment.

I really think that having kids should be a licensed and regulated activity, but I imagine that really wouldn't be too popular with the public.  Maybe placing snipers outside the houses of people with huge broods of kids, and picking the little bastards off as they walked out the door? - nope. probably would get voted down.

This idiot broad's dad is going back to Iraq because nobody in the house makes enough money to feed the family, wtf? Her doctor is an irresponsible asshat and should be stripped of his medical license.

I mean hell. I have two kids. It's hard enough these days to make sure that just TWO have a good life, to work full time and give them the individual attention that they need, I can't IMAGINE having FIFTEEN OF THEM. :hammer:

holy shit she's fucking nutso

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090131/ap_on_re_us/octuplets

She's obviously a whack job.

Quote
LOS ANGELES - The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.

Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.

"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

I think whoever the doctor is or are who implanted her with 8 fucking eggs or embryos should lose their license and possibly face criminal charges.

that is so fucked up on so many levels! this is the first ive heard that. i caught a snippit of the interview with the grandfather earlier today, but wasnt able to stick around for much.

this is the exact reason why we shouldnt be fucking around with artificial means of impregnation. not only did the physician jeopardize the womans life, but he taxed staff for his own unethical reasons and practices and abused the concept of the procedure.

so, what say you? ive always felt that fucking with reproduction is dangerous. i view it as almost a darwinian repercussion when an individual is not equipped to functionally reproduce, whether it be a male or female. in particular, a female. if a body continually rejects a fertilized embryo, there is a reason for it. i feel that harvesting a sperm and an egg and fertilizing them outside of the body and placing them into a host, not only has its potential for social conflict, but physically youre producing a child that may posses an inferior genetic composition that wasnt meant to thrive evolutionarily.

i also feel that utilizing drugs to induce the release of eggs or clinically harvesting and then fertilizing them outside the body and then returning them to the uterus in order to enable successful fertilization is also fucking with the natural order and because it heightens the potential health risks to both the mother and the multiple births, it should not be a routine medical procedure.

any medical practitioner who allows an exorbitant pregnancy (more than 2-3 fetuses) should not be allowed to practice medicine.

I would think its easy for people like us who have had children to say and think like that. When you are a desperate couple wanting children the view point would be a lot different.

The real issue IMO is this bitch already has six kids and is a single mother with no income to support her bastard children. The medical bills will amount to millions and I am well fucking pleased this cunt isn't in my country sucking tax payer dollars.

In this case I agree there should never have been medical interference

oh definitely. it must infinitely suck to love someone and want to share that love by celebrating a child together and not being able to do so, but dont you think the body should transcend technology in such a matter? i mean unless you were raped or your physical ability has been impeded by unnatural means, if you dont have viable sustainable reproductive cells, its biological evolution on some level.

there are some darwinist reasons why some people arent/shouldnt be able to physically reproduce. i truly believe on some level that we just shouldnt be fucking around with human nature in this regard and the backlash of doing so wont be evident for generations. to me its kind of like trying to control the co2 levels of an entire massive planet, without fully understanding them.

The real issue IMO is this bitch already has six kids and is a single mother with no income to support her bastard children. The medical bills will amount to millions and I am well fucking pleased this cunt isn't in my country sucking tax payer dollars.

yeah, i had not been privy to a lot of the back story when i started the thread. i heard today she actually works at a fertility clinic as some sort of co-ordinator!! the more the story unfolds the more skeeved i am by the entire situation. we're all doomed i tell ya!  :lmao:

I do actually agree with this, and more so that there are people that should never be aloud to reproduce that can do it naturally.

Should people who are retarded be aloud to reproduce if they are going to reproduce more retards that will never add to the good of the world in any meaningful way or should we sterilize them?

Of course there are many that believe things started to go down hill when we gave women the vote  :snack:

In the news story it was said that this woman had all of her children, 14 in all, invetro.  Does that mean she's a vergin and these are vergin births? She's not married, has no boyfriend and all the babies were fertilized with the same sperm donar.

I understand the mothers point of view, I mean the woman and ALL of her kids live with grandma and grandpa. When grandma said "we told her not to have anymore children" she was most likely proclaiming ENOUGH IS ENOUGH for crying out loud.

When I first heard the story I had to ask myself does this woman have any way of supporting herself aside from trying to sell her story to the highest bider? I mean invetro isn't cheap so, how did she pay for all of this?

This sentence struck a chord with me. I've got two children from my first marriage, to a man who I should NEVER have married nor had children with. He was abusive, a shitty husband and a shitty father.

Fortunately for me, I found someone whom I love deeply, and I feel blessed every day to be sharing my life with him. Tell you what - every time I look at him, I wish he could have fathered those children. He's just so much better equipped, as a man and as an adult human being in general, to be their father. But just because he wasn't their BIOLOGICAL father, doesn't mean he can't be an integral part of their growth, and it doesn't mean that we can't be a family (I'd never try to keep their biological dad from seeing them, and I'd never speak ill of him anywhere within earshot of the girls, please don't think that).

Of course, we could have a baby of our own, but neither of us wants another child - and having one just to stroke your own ego is fucked up. Two kids is plenty, especially in this economy.

My point is that, if a couple wants to share the experience of child-rearing, and truly want to be a family, why not adopt? I understand, it's not the same thing as reproducing your own gene set, but with the number of orphaned children in the world today, I think that going to any kind of extreme just to have "your own" kids is the height of narcissism.

I think it's because she wants the publicity of it. She has a publicist now who is saying she is very stable mentally etc etc yadda - and doesn't want to and hasn't been on public assistance.

There was someone once, I forgot where at work or something, who made a comment about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with all their kids, not being a natural thing with the age differences and that the children will end up psychologically damaged. I don't agree with that, I think if they are raised in a loving environment, they can grow up to be normal. I wonder how it is in these instances when there are so many born at the same time.

But princess. Fucking with the natural order is what we humans do. We mold our environment to suit our needs. I think we should certainly follow some restraints though.
Like say ~not~ having 8 friggin kids on top of the 6 she already has.

I don't believe artificial insemination is a bad thing. Taking it too far is a bad thing.

8 kids on top of her 6? WTF was she thinking? I think those kids should be taken from her for lack of better judgement on her part. I mean really. How is this woman going to care for 14 children. This ~unwed~ mother.

The stupid cunt.

Well, at this point it might better be described as a gaping pit than a cunt but you get my drift.

Now this wench looks like she's gonna be making the talk show circuits, first one was free, but I doubt the rest will be. Funny how most of the big corporations who in the past have donated cars/baby supplies/food, etc, etc to those parents who have had an assload of kids at one time... have steered far clear of this one.

Oh yeah - this one is just silly to me. To have 6 kids in this day and age being a single mom is a little much. To decide to invitro and get 8 more live fetuses is ridiculous.

While at first i was clearly upset, believing the doctors should have done something to prevent that many kids being born, it isn't my place to tell someone how many kids to have. They could all end up the best kids and humans ever for all we know!

From some of the shit I've seen, a lot of fertility Dr.s are very upset about the amount of embryos placed inside this wench, pretty much calling it unsafe, and unethical.

Why are they even interviewing this nutjob?  Any woman who has 6 kids, no job, does not have a home of her own to take them to, and then gets IVF and delivers 8 more is certifiably a mental case.

If the media gives her the publicity, the networks will give her a show, and I think that is what she is banking on.  :hammer:

People aren't too happy about her.

On the news this morning they said she is on food stamps and medi-cal (state medical) But no! She said the taxpayers aren't paying for her kids! my ass.

Well placed and deserved outrage imo. I think when someone is mentally ill and does something like this, sterilization SHOULD be an option.

Taxpayers may have to cover octuplet mom's costs

LOS ANGELES - A big share of the financial burden of raising Nadya Suleman's 14 children could fall on the shoulders of California's taxpayers, compounding the public furor in a state already billions of dollars in the red.

Even before the 33-year-old single, unemployed mother gave birth to octuplets last month, she had been caring for her six other children with the help of $490 a month in food stamps, plus Social Security disability payments for three of the youngsters. The public aid will almost certainly be increased with the new additions to her family.

Also, the hospital where the octuplets are expected to spend seven to 12 weeks has requested reimbursement from Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, for care of the premature babies, according to the Los Angeles Times. The cost has not been disclosed.

Word of the public assistance has stoked the furor over Suleman's decision to have so many children by having embryos implanted in her womb. "It appears that, in the case of the Suleman family, raising 14 children takes not simply a village but the combined resources of the county, state and federal governments," Los Angeles Times columnist Tim Rutten wrote in Wednesday's paper. He called Suleman's story "grotesque."

On the Internet, bloggers rained insults on Suleman, calling her an "idiot," criticizing her decision to have more children when she couldn't afford the ones she had and suggesting she be sterilized.

"It's my opinion that a woman's right to reproduce should be limited to a number which the parents can pay for," Charles Murray wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Daily News. "Why should my wife and I, as taxpayers, pay child support for 14 Suleman kids?"

She was also berated on talk radio, where listeners accused her of manipulating the system and being an irresponsible mother.

"From the outside you can tell that this woman was playing the system," host Bryan Suits said on the "Kennedy and Suits" show on KFI-AM. "You're damn right the state should step in and seize the kids and adopt them out."

Suleman's spokesman, Mike Furtney, urged understanding.

If I may: Food stamps are a form of public assistance, that I grant you, but Social Security Disability is not. You're only eligible for SSDI if you've worked and are then deemed unable, because of a mental or physical disability, to continue to do so. Medicaid (in this case Medi-Cal) is also a form of public assistance; food stamps and medicaid are applied for via the "welfare" office. They're totally separate from the disability thing.

Having said that, the knucklehead should not be allowed to have 14 babies and I think Child Protective Services should step in. If she's really mentally disabled and unable to work and therefore qualifies for SSDI, she should NOT be responsible for those babies. And her doctors should be fucking ashamed of themselves for participating in this debacle.

This just gets more twilight zonish as it unfolds..

This woman is a certifiable nutcase.  She really needs to have those babies taken away from her for their own good.  Did anyone see the rooms they sleep in...crack houses look more habitable.
