Is Sarah Palin truly missing a chromosome?
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:34:07 PM »

She really needs a fucking handler. Even more so than McCain. Before I thought she was just a little retarded and out of touch, but now I am a little scared if this race should be "stolen".

This fucking moron is denouncing pork barrel spending on things like "fruit fly" research and now advocating the money should go to helping special needs kids.

For those of you unaware of what sort of testing is done on fruit flies and why... ::)

UNC Protein Discovery Could Boost Autism Research

By UNC News Service

Chapel Hill ? Neurons, or nerve cells, communicate with each other through contact points called synapses. When these connections are damaged, communication breaks down, causing the messages that would normally help our feet push our bike pedals or our mind locate our car keys to fall short.

Now scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine have shown that a protein called neurexin is required for these nerve cell connections to form and function correctly.

The discovery, made in Drosophila fruit flies may lead to advances in understanding autism spectrum disorders, as recently, human neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism.

?This finding now gives us the opportunity to see what job neurexin performs within the cell, so that we can gain a better insight into what can go wrong in the nervous system when neurexin function is lost,? said Dr. Manzoor Bhat, associate professor of cell and molecular physiology in the UNC School of Medicine and senior author of the study.

The study, published online Sept. 6, 2007, in the journal Neuron, is the first to successfully demonstrate in a Drosophila model the consequences that mutating this important protein may have on synapses.

The research was supported in part by grants from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health and funds from the state of North Carolina.

During the last decade, scientists have learned that neurexins are integral to the transmission of chemical signals within the nervous system.

Neurexins interact with binding partners called neuroligins to link neighboring nerve cells together so that signals can be sent and received correctly.

Previous attempts to study these proteins in animal models have been challenging. In vertebrates such as mice, three different genes code for the production of certain neurexin proteins. Deleting just one of these genes causes no adverse effects in mouse models, while removing all three is fatal. But fruit flies have only one gene for neurexin, and when Bhat and colleagues deleted the gene, the flies survived ? barely.

?Knocking out neurexin basically resulted in a fly with defective nervous system,? said Bhat, also a member of the UNC Neuroscience Center and the UNC Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Center.

First of all, the mutated fruit flies had trouble moving around. When the researchers examined the synapses in these flies, they found that half of them were gone. The synapses that remained were deformed, causing them to send out less chemical signals. The researchers, led by Jingjun Li, a graduate student in neurobiology in the UNC School of Medicine, concluded that neurexin is required for the growth of synapses, for the maintenance of their structure and for their function.

Currently, Bhat and other scientists are working to identify the proteins that neurexin binds to, how they interact, and what sequence of events ultimately results in the organization of synapses within nerve cells. The hope is that such studies in Drosophila will one day clarify the role neurexin plays in learning and memory, ultimately leading to a better understanding of how defects in this protein can lead to human disorders such as autism, Bhat said.

Oh Bother...it gets even better.

On 10/21 during an English conducted/translated to Spanish interview for UNIVISION ( :rotf: yeah, who is hiding from the mainstream press, hmmm??), the twit is her usual misguided self, spewing her baseless, devoid of anything substantial factoids and unable to offer anything via an actual remedy to the "problem".

Sarah Palin had kept mum on the topic of immigration right up until her first interview with a Spanish-language network. Anchor Jorge Ramos sat down with the Republican vice presidential candidate to finally shed some light on Palin's views on immigration.

The interview was aired on October 21, 2008 during the broadcast of "Aqu? y Ahora" on Univision Network. The following excerpt was taken from that interview:

Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?

I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Border security was not discussed; a topic that McCain has focused on as the first step to immigration reform, but Palin and McCain seem to agree on having a path to citizenship.

So, just how many illegal immigrants are there in the US, you ask?

A little more than the 12 million projected in 2003, thats fer surrre!

The Department of Homeland Security estimated in December 2003 that 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens resided in the United States and 700,000 new illegals enter and stay each year. These official estimates are somewhat suspect and may represent significant undercounts, as they are produced by the very entity responsible for the tidal wave of illegal aliens entering our nation ?the United States Government. An alternative methodology is used here to estimate a range of numbers of illegals that is likely more realistic.

Try 37,609,203 and counting dipshit!

I love how they talk about pork barrel and NEVER mention the biggest trillion dollar albatross of all - Iraq, followed by the $700 million credit bailout that they had to line with pork in order to get other Republicans to vote with McCain and Bush.

That Jeopardy theme was frickin hilarious. I can't watch them seriously anymore. They are like cariacatures of themselves now.

It's truly disgusting! It's like, if they just keep repeating the same lies over and over again somehow we'll start believing the bull shit as much as they do.

I'm re-watching Meet the Press while doing homework with the kids. Brokaw seems to be just going with the motions, as he did at the debate. It's almost as if he knows engaging McCain with anything serious, would be prodigate and he is just fulfilling a obligation of some sort in allowing McCain on the program for the 40th time?? Or maybe he is just despondent about delving into more controversial matters because his queries are only being met with those same empty talking points, regardless of what he asks?

It's strikingly similar to the VP debate in that regardless of what Brokaw says or what the topic is, McCain is not going to provide a direct answer and is only there to further his own lackluster agenda and continue to smear Obama and pedal his lies.

Brokaw sucks. I mean he really sucks. They should have gotten Chris Mathews or even Bob Costas to try and fill Tim Russert's shoes. Brokaw can barely think on his feet.

Yes, I agree. I've never seen him in this light before. I'm disturbed. Is it age? He was also wearing an inordinate amount of make-up. Both men were. It creeped me out a little. I also noticed he was perched on the edge of that chair as if he had hemorrhoids and left his chairbuddy donut on the bus.  :vc:
